Why are men in the US unhappy about the business?
In general the issues relate to trust and transparency. Many male clients have come to expect that dishonesty is prevalent in the business and seek a way to deal with their anxieties. In the process, some men become so disillusioned that they either cease their search or become ‘scam hunters’ seeking out women and businesses who can be blamed for their lack of success. Undoubtedly this has a collateral effect upon honest businesses and their female clients.
There is a cycle of mistrust with only one outcome, a decline in business and inevitably many agencies will simply cease to exist.
Of course not all men are perfect and some men have sought wives from the Former Soviet Union in order to dominate and persecute them, thinking, often correctly, that these women would be less able to protect themselves. There have been several high profile cases where women have been killed by their American husbands and other cases where women and their families have been terrorized by brutish men. Fortunately, this is a very small proportion of men engaged in the pursuit of a Russian wife but some of these cases, such as the case of Indle and Anastasia King and more recently Scott Huss who has just been found guilty of the violent murder of his Russian wife Yana, in full view of their young son Peter, have become national scandals.
To place this issue into context, the only research I could find on the subject of abuse of women introduced to the US via international marriage agencies suggested that less than 1% of women in such marriages have reported abuse. “Regular” women in the United States report abuse at a rate of 7% per year.1
The men who bring women from Russia to the United States seem to be less likely to abuse their wives than ‘normal’ men, yet you are being accused of being abusers even before you make contact with a woman, let alone marry her!
Because of the hysteria whipped up around these isolated cases legislation has been introduced to attempt to provide information to incoming fiancées and wives and to make sure that convicted batterers do not have access to the IMB industry.
Even though it is probably true that, in the whole, men marrying foreign brides are LESS likely to be wife beaters and abusers popular opinion and activist forces have and will continue to clamp down on this easy target of just a few tens of thousands of men.
